Pakistan Furniture Council Urges Government to Grant Industry Status to Furniture Sector
Lahore, Pakistan — The Pakistan furniture sector is calling for stronger government recognition and support, as industry leaders urge policymakers to grant the sector official “industry status” to unlock its full economic and export potential. The demand was raised by the Pakistan Furniture Council (PFC), which emphasized that the furniture industry is a significant contributor to employment, craftsmanship, and national economic development.
During a meeting of the council’s board of directors, PFC Chief Executive Mian Kashif Ashfaq stressed that granting industry status would open doors to financial incentives, improved infrastructure, and better access to international markets for Pakistani furniture manufacturers. According to Ashfaq, the sector has long been overlooked despite its strong potential to generate exports, create jobs, and promote Pakistan’s traditional craftsmanship globally.
Unlocking Economic Potential
The furniture sector in Pakistan employs a large workforce, from skilled woodworkers and designers to manufacturers and retailers. Industry leaders argue that formal recognition as an industry would provide access to government incentives such as subsidies, tax benefits, and easier financing options for businesses.
Ashfaq noted that such recognition would also help the sector attract both domestic and foreign investment, enabling companies to modernize production facilities, adopt advanced manufacturing technologies, and improve product quality. These improvements could significantly enhance the competitiveness of Pakistani furniture in global markets.
Boosting Exports and Global Competitiveness
Industry experts believe that the furniture sector holds immense potential to expand Pakistan’s export portfolio. With proper policy support, Pakistani furniture—known for its handcrafted designs and traditional artistry—could achieve wider recognition internationally.
According to the PFC leadership, granting industry status would help the sector scale up production, increase efficiency, and strengthen export strategies. This would allow Pakistani manufacturers to compete more effectively with global furniture exporters while increasing foreign exchange earnings for the country.
Investment in Skills and Technology
Another key priority highlighted by the council is the need for skill development and technology adoption. The furniture sector relies heavily on craftsmanship, and industry leaders believe that training programs for artisans and designers are essential to maintain quality standards and meet international demand.
PFC also recommended stronger collaboration between the government and private sector to develop training initiatives, promote innovation, and support small and medium-sized furniture enterprises.
A Strategic Move for National Growth
The Pakistan Furniture Council emphasized that recognizing the furniture sector as an industry would not only strengthen the sector itself but also support related industries such as timber, interior design, logistics, and retail.
Industry observers believe that with the right policies, Pakistan could emerge as a competitive player in the global furniture market, creating employment opportunities and boosting economic growth.
As discussions continue, stakeholders remain hopeful that the government will take decisive action to provide the recognition and support needed to transform the country’s furniture sector into a thriving global industry.
