Indonesia’s Furniture Industry Sets Sights on Global Leadership and Sustainable Growth

Jakarta, Indonesia — Indonesia’s furniture industry is entering a new era of transformation, driven by an ambitious national vision and a renewed commitment to sustainability. With a strong heritage of craftsmanship and a rapidly expanding export market, the nation is setting its sights on becoming a global leader in furniture production. The Indonesian government has set an ambitious target to nearly double its export revenue, aiming to reach US$5 billion by the end of 2024, underscoring its determination to strengthen the sector’s global footprint.

A defining moment for this vision emerged during the Indonesia International Furniture Expo (IFEX) 2023, held on March 12. The event brought together key stakeholders from both the public and private sectors, showcasing the shared optimism that Indonesia has the potential to lead on the world stage. However, industry experts stressed that achieving this goal requires a stable and sustainable supply of raw materials to maintain production quality and consistency.

One of the main challenges faced by Indonesian furniture exporters involves compliance with international sustainability standards, particularly from the European Union (EU). Export destinations such as Germany and the Netherlands demand certifications like the Forest Law Enforcement, Governance, and Trade (FLEGT) license. To align with these global benchmarks, Indonesia has implemented the Timber Legality Verification System (SVLK) — a national initiative ensuring all timber-based products meet strict legality and environmental requirements.

To further strengthen this framework, the Ministry of Industry has announced plans to integrate wood and rattan into the National Commodity Balance System — a central database designed to monitor national supply, production, and consumption. This initiative aims to guarantee long-term stability in raw material sourcing while promoting transparency across the entire supply chain.

Putu Juli Ardika, Director General of Agro Industry at the Ministry of Industry, reaffirmed the government’s commitment during IFEX, stating, “Industry players are targeting exports to reach 5 billion US dollars. To meet this target, the government continues to provide serious support to the furniture industry.”

The private sector echoes this confidence. Abdul Sobur, Chairperson of the Presidium of the Indonesian Furniture and Craft Association (HIMKI), praised the resilience and innovation within the local industry, expressing optimism about its global potential. According to Mordor Intelligence, Indonesia’s furniture market is projected to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 7% between 2022 and 2028, signaling robust expansion ahead.
